For centuries, the people of Devon have shared stories of giants, witches, pixies, ghosts and mysterious happenings upon the high moor. Every tor seems to have its own tale, every valley its own folklore and every storyteller their own version of events.
Dartmoor Tales is my new series of standalone novels inspired by those timeless legends. Rather than simply retelling the old stories, each book reimagines them, asking what if…? What if the truth behind the legends was something altogether different? What if the old tales still echo through the modern world?
The first of these stories is Bowerman and the White Witch, inspired by the famous legend of Bowerman’s Nose.
Long before the Romans marched into Britain, before the Celts reached Dartmoor and before history was ever written down, the moor belonged to older peoples. Among them was Bowerman, a giant hunter and guardian of the wild places, whose fate would become one of Dartmoor’s greatest legends.
Thousands of years later, Helen Lemoncombe lives a quiet life as a herbalist, finding comfort amongst the tors, rivers and ancient woodlands she has loved since childhood. But when she stumbles upon a mystery hidden beneath the granite, she finds herself drawn into a story stretching back to the dawn of human history, where myth and reality are separated by little more than the passing of time.
